This Red Velvet cake was definitely not what I expected. It could be that I have no experience with Red Velvet cake but with this recipe the cake was much to heavy. The Icing was bland and honestly tasted like flour. Overall the cake was nothing special.

Steps to make Red Velvet Cake:
  1. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees
  2. Assume all ingredients are weighed,sift the dry ingredients together (flour,cocoa,sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt)
  3. Mix the milk with vinegar and keep aside for 5 minutes. The milk will curdle to form buttermilk. Now add colour to this mix.
  4. Separately whisk the wet ingredients – prepared buttermilk, melted butter and vanilla essence.
  5. Add it to the dry ingredients and mix well with a spatula or with electric beater till there are no lumps.
  6. Grease the baking tin. Then pour in the butter and bake at 180 degrees for 50 minutes.
  7. When ready insert a skewer inside if it come out clean then it is ready
  8. Remove from the oven and serve.

The Icing was bland and honestly tasted like flour. Overall the cake was nothing special. However I am willing to try it again just to make sure it was not my own fault. In a large bowl using a hand mixer (or in the bowl of a stand mixer), beat butter and sugar. This is similar to the original recipe that began the red velvet craze.
